Second graders are flying! We are reviewing common vowel patterns. Some groups are focusing on long vowel patterns and other groups are working on vowels followed by "r". We call these "r controlled vowels".
When we read together, we are working on self-recognizing errors and self-correcting by rereading a word, phrase, or sentence.
We are working on reading both fiction and nonfiction and understanding different previewing techniques for different types of reading. For instance, when reading fiction, the pictures will help to support our story understanding and flow, as well as searching for character's names prior to reading. When reading non-fiction, captions, charts, pictures, and graphs, can help to support our understanding.

February is here! Your reader is continuing to use the cueing questions mentioned in my post below.
Second graders are learning that pictures can set the stage for understanding reading, but also other types of graphics such as charts and big and bold print.
We are working on learning our sight words through sight word phrases.
We are learning to apply known word patterns along with our important cueing questions.

Second grade readers are soaring!
During reading intervention we are focusing on our three cueing questions...
Our fix up strategies include:
During the month of January, we will be focusing on reading for information and finding text evidence. We will be expanding our vocabulary by applying words to our reading such as harsh, warning, event, movement, and understand.
Second graders have a large body of sight words. We will constantly review our sight words, but we give extra focus to these words this month.

During reading intervention we are focusing on our three cueing questions...
- Does it look right?
- Does it sound right?
- Does it make sense?
Our fix up strategies include:
- Re-reading a word, a phrase, or a sentence.
- Looking at the beginning of the word...getting our mouth ready for the first sound, finding familiar word chunks in a word, and sticking with the word from the beginning to the end.
- Thinking about the story and what would make sense both visually and within the context of the sentence.
